The Jungle Book goes two-disc
If it’s Tuesday, it must be new DVD release day! I don’t know who picked this day of the week but it is an interesting choice. Looking about Amazon, the list of new release titles coming out tends to have a few items of interest and a fair number of duds.
This week sees one of those interesting titles, Disney’s 1967 “The Jungle Book”. Any true fan of Disney animation will tell you that this one has a certain bit of special interest for them. As the last animated feature film that Walt Disney oversaw, it contains a memorable character in Baloo the Bear, as voiced by Phil Harris. His rendition of “The Bare Necessities” is definitely among my favorite songs from any Disney film, as I sure it may be for many others.
And I also remember the film for another reason. Specifically seeing it for my birthday (in 1967, of course) at the Varsity Theater in downtown Palo Alto . Likewise, I recall root beer flavored hard candies from that day, and on a rare occasion that I have one now, I go right back to that day. With my dad and whoever the guests were (no memories there?), it was a great afternoon with a fun film. Where are actors like George Sanders when we need them? Shere Khan was just so delightfully smooth, yet evil...
With all of the extra goodies, this one definitely looks like a disc to add to that Amazon wish list for Christmas!
