If it’s Friday...
If it’s Friday...
then this must be my day off.
Funny things, days off. We all look forward each week to the time we don’t have to do what ever we all do to pay the bills. Sometimes we plan down to the last second what will occupy those precious moments of freedom. Other times, we just take it as it comes.
On my current job, the usual days for most folks (Saturday and Sunday) are just the first two days of my work week. I may not be thrilled about it, but hey! Who is? If one is really lucky, you managed to find something as an occupation that you enjoy. It’s a fair bet that most of us out here were not that lucky. So what are we gonna do, you know? Gotta pay the bills...
Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, the SF Chronicle puts together an insert each Thursday called 96 Hours. All in all, a pretty neat idea. A good solid look at things going on over the upcoming weekend. For a few folks I know who work a four-day week (four ten-hour days) that extra weekend day is something of a blessing or a curse. The longer work day added to the commute pretty much eats up the better part of those four days. So what might have once left time to do mundane things like house cleaning or even grocery shopping just doesn’t exist any more. That extra day off ends up being a marathon of catch up that never seems to end.
Still other folks I know have jobs that are on-call. From week to week, heck even day to day, you have no idea of what time you’ll start work or even when you may end up at the end of the shift. And thanks to Federal regulations, that day can be as much as twelve hours “on duty” with some occasions not including time traveling to or from where the fates find them.
Then on the total opposite end of the spectrum, I know a few folks who would enjoy having any kind of a work week. For what ever reason they aren’t employed. Here’s hoping they will be soon!
Anyway, enjoy your time off. I know I will... Now, what to do?
